What is the best time of year to cycle in South Africa?

The Western Cape offers some of the finest cycling conditions anywhere in the world from spring through autumn, with each season bringing its own unique appeal.

Spring (September–November)

Spring sees the Cape burst into colour as wildflowers bloom across the countryside and vineyards begin their growing season. Temperatures are generally mild, ranging between 15–25°C (59–77°F), creating ideal conditions for long days in the saddle. Roads are quieter than peak summer, making this an excellent time to experience the Cape Peninsula and Winelands.

Summer (December–February)

Summer brings warm, sunny days and long daylight hours. Average temperatures range from 25–32°C (77–90°F), although coastal breezes often keep conditions comfortable. This is the liveliest time of year, with vibrant cafés, wineries and restaurants creating an energetic atmosphere throughout Cape Town and Stellenbosch.

Autumn (March–April)

Autumn is widely regarded as one of the best times to cycle in South Africa. Temperatures become slightly cooler, vineyards transform into shades of gold and red, and the grape harvest brings the Cape Winelands to life. Stable weather, quieter roads and comfortable riding conditions make this a favourite season for many cyclists.

Our Cape to Safari tour has been carefully scheduled to take advantage of these superb autumn conditions.
